Our Emblematic Plants are UEBT Certified!

We are very proud to announce that our 9 Iconic Plants from La Gacilly, Brittany

We are very proud to announce that our 9 Iconic Plants from La Gacilly, Brittany are now UEBT-Certified!

We are now the first French brand to receive this certification, and to have certified French ingredients. This is why this is great news for the brand, its consumers and Mother Nature.

What is the UEBT?

The UEBT (Union for Ethical BioTrade) is an International Non-Profit Organization that promotes the respectful sourcing of Natural Ingredients. The UEBT supports and verifies the sourcing commitments of businesses to ensure they contribute to a world in which both mankind and the biodiversity thrive.

In order to do this, the UEBT sets out good practices on how businesses and their suppliers source ingredients from biodiversity for the following sectors, amongst others : beauty, food, natural pharmaceuticals, flavors, fragrances, herbs and spices.

Yves Rocher has been a member of UEBT since 2020.

What does this mean for Yves Rocher?

At Yves Rocher, this commitment has been in place since 1999, notably through our 60 hectares of organic fields in Brittany grown using sustainable agricultural practices.

By becoming a member of UEBT in 2020, Yves Rocher joined companies committed to an ethical sourcing of ingredients from biodiversity.

In 2021, Yves Rocher therefore decides to take an additional step towards the protection of species and humans thanks to the UEBT certification of its Gacilian sectors. The 9 iconic plants of the brand  are now UEBT-Certified;  (1) Roman Chamomile  (2) Chamomile  (3) Cornflower   (4) Calendula   (5) Glacier Lettuce  (6) Edulis  (7) Nasturtium  (8) Mint and  (9) Arnica .

Our La Gacilly suppliers being certified is just the first step in our sustainable sourcing approach, as Yves Rocher aims to have its entire supply chain certified by 2023.

What does UEBT Ingredient Certification mean?

UEBT Certification ensures that an ingredient is sourced with respect for people and biodiversity. Certification applies to a specific ingredient. Certification is granted once independent audits verify compliance with the criteria of the UEBT Ethical BioCommerce Standard which is based on the following 7 principles:

1. Conservation of BioDiversity
2. Sustainable use of BioDiversity
3. Fair and equitable sharing of benefits when using BioDiversity
4. Socio-Economic Sustainability (production, financial & market management)
5. Compliance with National and International Legislation
6. Respect for the Rights of Stakeholders involved in the BioTrade industry
7. Transparency on land tenure, exploitation rights and access to natural resources

What is the difference between the UEBT and the Organic Certification?

The UEBT and the Organic Farming Certifications are two different, but complementary, labels.

While the Ethical Biotrade Standard requires certain practices that respect the BioDiversity, such as protecting forests, endangered species and pollinators, enriching natural ecosystems and reducing pesticides, the UEBT standards also advocate for human and social respect in a more global sourcing context. The UEBT principles particularly focus on workers' rights, protecting the rights of local communities, sharing the benefits when using resources from biodiversity, etc.

Furthermore, both Certifications require more Environmentally-Friendly Agricultural Practices: the Organic Farming Certificate requires complying with a list of predefined specifications and the UEBT certification requires the Development of a Rigorous BioDiversity Action Plan.

Anti-aging & anti-wrinkle: which is best for me

When should you be using them? We demystify it all for you!

In the cosmetics world, anti-aging and wrinkle products are universally known and extremely common. But what are they actually used for? How do they differ? And when should you use them?

What's the difference between anti-aging and anti-wrinkle products?

The names might sound similar, but they work in different ways.

Wrinkle products are highly targeted. Like the name suggests, they treat and smooth out wrinkles that have already formed on your face, like frown lines and crow's feet, in terms of appearance.

Anti-aging skincare is more comprehensive than anti-wrinkle products and has a more global action because it also addresses issues like firmness, age spots, and a dull complexion. Anti-aging creams are enriched with hydrating, nourishing and antioxidant ingredients, plus they limit the so-called “oxidative” stress caused by everyday life (pollution, smoking, sun, etc.). They act like a defense shield against environmental damages.

Which skincare is best for my skin type?

The condition of your skin constantly changes throughout your life. The recommendation for the best way to prevent cutaneous aging is to start using specialized skincare as early as possible and, most importantly, to establish good habits. Turn back the clock with a balanced lifestyle and diet, regular exercise, and of course a beauty routine and basic daily rituals that minimize the skin’s aging process.

Even before thinking about choosing an anti-aging treatment, it's important to follow a few simple rules: always wash your skin and keep it well hydrated. This golden rule applies at any age and helps to keep your skin in great condition.

In your 20s, your skin is still producing enough collagen so there’s no need to use an anti-aging treatment. But you can slowly begin adding an eye cream to your routine.

The first wrinkles

As your skin starts producing less collagen, a few expression lines may make an appearance. No big deal. The advice is to get a wrinkle treatment twice a year and keep making sure your skin is really well hydrated, for example with the Sérum Végétal or Elixir Jeunesse lines.

What distinguishes a mature skin?

A “mature” skin has more pronounced wrinkles and less elasticity, so it may be reason to use an anti-aging product morning and night. And you can start regularly using an anti-aging product. For example, the Anti-Age Global range can be a good choice because it rejuvenates and firms up the skin, plus it corrects all signs of aging.*

*In terms of appearance.

And then what happens to my skin?

Then, when your skin is generating less and less sebum and gets thinner, the epidermis doesn’t renew itself as quickly, and the skin becomes weaker. This is when an anti-aging products can be used all the time while still keeping your skin well hydrated. The Riche Crème line is ideal for this because its active botanical ingredient is made of 30 precious oils.

In a nutshell, anti-aging and anti-wrinkle products can be used gradually based on the condition of your skin because we don’t necessarily have the same signs at the same age. They have to be clearly distinguished and applied according to your skin's specific needs. Scientific advances are now resulting in highly effective serums and creams that are specially made for different skin types. Pick the one that’s best for you!

How does yoga help you stay young and beautiful?

Tonicity and wellness, how it encourages to your youthfulness

It improves strength and focus, plus it reduces stress – there's so many things to love about yoga! It also helps tone your body and enhance a feeling of wellbeing. We’ll explain why!

A path to a beautiful you

Does yoga make you beautiful? Absolutely! No doubt about it! Your body is in motion, it heats up and blood circulates everywhere, which helps with cell renewal. You sweat and some of the toxins in your body are flushed out through your pores, which brings oxygen to your skin.

And that’s not all: you get more wrinkles when your face is tense! Yoga is known for being relaxing. It makes you unwind and fills you with positive energy. And therein lies the magic because feeling positive and calm inside also shows on your face!

So here it is in a nutshell: blood circulation + sweat + relaxation = toned skin, impurities eliminated, and undeniable serenity on your face!

Keep your body's flexibility

Yoga has a range of postures that help you stay young by maintaining your body for the long term, toning the muscles, and keeping you flexible. As your body gets older, everyday aches and pains can set in like joint and back problems and cramps. Yoga can alleviate some of this pain. Here are a few postures for keeping your body young.

Palms on the floor: slowly bend forward with your head, shoulders and then the back. Move your hands as close as possible to your feet. If you're flexible enough, touch the floor with your palms! This posture increases your blood circulation.

The cobra or sphinx: lie face down with your chest elevated and arms outstretched. It improves flexibility in the spine and helps relieve back problems.

Downward dog: legs and arms outstretched supporting your weight on both sides with your body in a V shape. This pose gets the blood circulating in the head and stretches the spine.

Face yoga

Yoga is great for keeping the body in shape, but what about your face? There is a type of yoga that delays the appearance of and reduces expression lines. Here are some beneficial movements that tone the face muscles that are prone to sagging!

Reduce forehead wrinkles: make two fists and place them in the middle of your forehead. Press down and slide your fists while gently stretching the skin on your forehead out toward the temples.

Tone mouth muscles: close your mouth and fill your cheeks with air. Hold this position for five seconds, then push the air over to your right cheek. Hold for five seconds. Repeat on the left side, then the upper lip and the lower lip.

Tone cheeks and neck: push your chin forward. Put your upper lip over your lower lip. Try to smile and lift your chin to the ceiling. It's totally normal if it makes you laugh! Hold this position for 10 seconds.

Pratiqués régulièrement, les cours de yoga sont comme une cure de jouvence pour votre corps, votre esprit et votre peau, alors n'hésitez plus !

Grand Rouge Mat: Behind the Scenes

We're inviting you behind the scenes to learn how we created the Grand Rouge Mat

Learn about the three years our labs spent developing this super challenging product. The result is a matte lipstick that doesn't dry out and really delivers in terms of color and matte effect.

What was the challenge? The goal was a long-wearing matte finish lipstick that goes on comfortably and has a non-drying texture. All of this and it couldn’t contain any silicone or cochineal carmine, plus it had to have a high content of natural ingredients.

To achieve color and coverage, we used a higher percentage of pigments than our regular lipsticks.

We chose the regenerative camellia oil – our favorite active ingredient – to ensure comfort.

We quickly realized that it's very hard to combine a matte effect with comfort. You’ve probably already noticed, but matte products are usually very dry and those that aren’t do not deliver a totally matte look...

Determined not to compromise, we continued our research.

Step 1: Selecting the least shiny raw materials and least drying powders.

We ran into many problems, one of which was cleaning the molds. Matte actually means making a formula packed with powder and pigment, which makes it a lot stickier. We had to test out a number of cleaning products before realizing that an ordinary washing machine for clothes was the best solution.

After three years of work, we have a lipstick we are proud of. It took us some time, but we did it for the pleasure of your lovely smile.

Now that everything works like a charm, here is the final recipe:

Then the process is scaled up at the plant. Your lipstick goes through many different assembly machines before it winds up in your purse!

And don't be surprised at how light the packaging is because we made sure not to use any metal – and that makes Mother Nature happy.

Anti-Aging Foods

Learn about the best food to help protect and extend your skin’s youth!

Do you know about anti-aging foods? Here's a list of them that help protect and extend your skin’s youth, plus some ideas for delectable recipes you can savor to your heart’s content!

Antioxidants

We hear a lot about them, but what are they?

Antioxidants are your weapon against free radicals that cause skin to become less firm and supple. Your body produces them naturally, but we're sorry to say not enough to fend off the signs of aging. Don’t panic! You can kick-start production through your diet!

Here’s a quick overview of antioxidant foods you can eat to help keep your skin supple!

The Vitamin Force

Vitamins are the antioxidant heroes and the most well known.

Vitamin A to help cell regeneration. It boosts collagen and is found in sweet potatoes, red peppers, avocados and broccoli.

Vitamin C stimulates collagen synthesis as it fights free radicals to make skin firmer and more radiant. Long live black currants, kiwi fruits, grapefruits, oranges and clementines!

The power trio of vitamin A, C, and E naturally help defend your skin against dangerous UVB rays. Vitamin E can be found in sunflower oil, almonds (nuts), salmon and eggs.

These vitamins are essential for keeping your skin beautiful and supple. They're a real anti-aging cocktail!

The Polyphenols Force

These plant molecules are antioxidants that also boast anti-inflammatory powers. Where can you find them? In grapes and red fruits like strawberries and raspberries, as well as in tea and chocolate! For example, berries are rich in polyphenols (and therefore antioxidants) and help slow down the appearance of wrinkles.

Remember: Prioritize fresh, seasonal and organic so you can take full advantage of the nutrients and anti-aging benefits of these foods!

The Zinc and Selenium Duo

Also a member of the antioxidant family, this pair helps the body battle oxidative stress!

Foods highest in selenium are mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, fish and seafood. It helps repair DNA damage.

Zinc is found in seafood as well, but also in whole grain bread, egg yolks and beef. In addition to its antioxidant power, it helps wounds heal and aids with skin disorders like psoriasis.

Recipe ideas for filling up on antioxidants!

Ease into breakfast

Plain oatmeal doesn’t sound very appetizing, does it? Add a few goji berries and cranberries, some walnuts for the vitamin E and a tablespoon of flax seeds to moisturize and firm up your skin. On the side, have a little almond milk and green tea lightly sweetened with some agave syrup!

What's for lunch?

Tomatoes, of course. They're rich in vitamin C, E and beta carotene. Have them with some mozzarella cheese. Then get a dose of vitamin C (and B!): chicken with peppers and garlic. In the mood for some polyphenols? Well then, top off the meal with a few berries!

No-fuss dinner

It's easier for the body to absorb the antioxidants in salad greens if they are eaten with some oil – olive oil, for example! Scrambled eggs and a little broccoli for the vitamin E and a slice of smoked salmon. And not only is a half container of raspberries a nice treat full of vitamin C, it's also good for the skin because it delivers the nutrients it needs to stay firm and radiant!

What you need to know about alcohol in cosmetics

What is it used for, why using it... and what about Yves Rocher's formulas?

Ever wonder why is alcohol used in cosmetics? We have all the answers!

Alcool, Ethanol, Ethyl Alcohol… What is it all about?

Alcohol is an ingredient that you often see in cosmetics, and you're probably wondering where it comes from. Well, hold on to your hats because the alcohol in Yves Rocher products is produced exclusively by fermentation and distillation of beets!

In your beauty products, it's called ethanol or ethyl alcohol (labeled as “alcohol”) and we use it for a variety of reasons!

Why is it used in cosmetics?

Alcohol is considered to be "volatile", which means that it quickly evaporates after you apply it, and it makes the formulas work better because it "carries" the active ingredients. That is also why you get that great refreshing feeling (that we love!) when you put on deodorant.

You may already know that water is one of the most commonly used solvent is cosmetics, but it’s not the only one! Alcohol can extract or dissolve certain substances. For example, it's used in perfumes.

Alcohol has the property of  "de-lipidation" which is great for oily skin because it eliminates the excess sebum that collects on the skin’s surface.

Don't to confuse with fatty alcohols

Perhaps you’ve read names like behenyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol or benzyl alcohol on the back of your products and thought it was the same as ethanol. But think again! These are in fact close cousins called “fatty alcohols”! They are nothing like ethyl alcohol – totally different in appearance and properties. These non-toxic and non-irritant ingredients are beneficial for skincare and haircare. What's their super powers? They're film-forming, emollient, moisturizing, softening and protective.

Why do they have a bad reputation?

Depending on the type of skin, sometimes alcohol works “too well”! For example, its “degreasing” action can dry out or irritate sensitive or dry skin. Rest assured, it's not a instant irritant but it can become a nuisance for some skin types.

But don’t worry, the unwanted side effects can vary by the volume of alcohol and whether the formula contains calming or moisturizing agents (which can also partly or fully balance it out). It's all a matter of dosing and knowing how to formulate a product!

How does Yves Rocher use it in its products?

How does it work at Yves Rocher? We keep it very simple at Yves Rocher. To ensure perfect tolerance of our products, we don’t use any alcohol (or ethanol) in our formulas for sensitive skin and dry skin to avoid any risks of irritation!

Eat for hydration!

Hydrated skin starts on your plate! Discover our food tips & tricks!

Skincare products can give you beautiful hydrated skin, but they're not the only way! We can also increase the moisture in our skin through what we eat.

48H Non-Stop Hydration… How is that possible?

How is it possible? The Edulis, the star of our new Hydra Vegetal product line.

Everything you need to know about Edulis, our experts’ new favorite ingredient, the star of our new Hydra Vegetal product line.

We decided to explain how we can promise 48 hours of continuous hydration with our Hydra Vegetal Gel Cream by exploring the inner workings of Yves Rocher Botanical Beauty.

First, to make products that meet your skin’s needs, we have to understand your skin. Our skin biology experts studied skin moisture mechanisms and came to the definitive conclusion that properly moisturized skin needs 3 things:

1) TO STORE water in  its different layers.

2) TO  HOLD water by using its barrier to prevent evaporation.

3) TO RELEASE water continuously.

Once these factors were determined, other experts joined the study: botanists and phyto-analysts. They are plant specialists who work to find the best plant-based solution to skin hydration. After extensive research, they found the Edulis, a plant composed of water-filled cells and capable of storing and regulating this precious resource. What a breakthrough!

Next, they worked tirelessly to find the best method to extract the powerful ingredient: Edulis cellular water. They invented an exclusive, patented, and solvent-free extraction process that preserves the effectiveness and integrity of both the plant and environment.

Our agronomists chose to grow the plant—organically—on  our grounds. After only 6 months of greenhouse cultivation, tender sprouts filled with cellular water are harvested before they blossom. The ultra-fresh plant is whisked off to the extraction phase, which takes place near the greenhouse to preserve the plant’s quality in its entirety.

Finally, our formulation labs created the ideal formula  to use the ingredient in the best possible way. The formula contains 90% ingredients of natural origin and is mineral oil, silicone, and paraben free. It’s everything your skin could ask for! The result: 48 hours of non-stop hydration*, gorgeous skin for you, and for us, the satisfaction that comes with making you happy. Isn’t life beautiful?

*Clinical study conducted on 22 cases. 48-hour results after 2 weeks of twice-daily use.

Keep your sunkissed tan all summer long!

Our tips to maintain your sunkissed complexion!

Follow all of our tips to achieve a beautiful tan this summer and discover all of our tricks to maintain it all summer long!

1/ Exfoliate

Exfoliating well twice a week (1 week after returning) is a must to maintain your tan! Contrary to popular belief, this will not get rid of your tan; rather, it will make it more radiant by removing dead skin cells.

Our favorite products? The Konjac Body Sponge and the Konjac Face sponge, which are 100% plant-based. Thanks to the micro-exfoliating power of Konjac fibers, they provide a pleasant and gentle cleansing experience.

2/ Moisturize

All year long, you made sure to moisturize your skin well. Don’t lose the habit!

Start by washing your body with the Nourishing Cleansing Cream for Very Dry Skin, enriched with oat extract, which will deeply yet gently nourish your skin.

Then apply the Monoi-Scented 3-in-1 Moisturizing Lotion or the Traditional Tiare Oil to moisturize and enhance your skin with the sweet scent of summer vacation.

For your face, opt for the After-Sun Beautifying Anti-Aging Care, which will moisturize your skin while preventing premature wrinkles, which can be caused by prolonged sun exposure.

The Ultra-Moisturizing Liquid Serum and the 48-Hour Non-Stop Moisturizing Gel Cream will provide your skin with intense hydration, thanks to edulis.

Tips: In addition to moisturizing your skin, be sure to drink lots of water—at least 8 glasses a day.

3/ Food nourished by the sun

Fruit and vegetable season isn’t over yet, so keep enjoying their benefits for a healthy glow! Eat plenty of carotenoids, which stimulate your skin’s melanin. These can be found in carrots, melons, watermelon, apricots, red peppers, tomatoes... so many to choose from!

You can consume them however you like,  whether fresh, in smoothies, in salads... Be creative!

4/ Glowing make-up

Maintain your sun-kissed skin all summer on your face with these tips!

A little touch of our Bronzing Powder, which will give your complexion a natural, healthy, glowing effect.

And the bonus? Its monoi scent, which will make you reminisce about your vacation. Summer never ends!

Use your Powder Brush to mix the 2 shades together in a circular motion. Then apply it by drawing the number 3 on your face: from the forehead to the top of the cheekbone and then down along the contour of the face.

Facial treatment, luscious mouth and vertiginous look ... discover Lucia's beauty routine!

Every day

My day starts with the right skin care routine and a make-up look which reflects my mood (and matches my outfit) As I tend to have an oily t-zone, I wash my face with lukewarm water and the Sebo Végétal Purifying Cleansing Gel. It frees the skin of excess sebum without drying it out.

Afterwards, I’m using one of my favorite products: the 48H Non-Stop Moisturizing Gel Cream. This lightly textured, liquid gel cream penetrates quickly, hydrates the skin intensively and comes without any colorant, mineral oil or parabens.

From time to time I give an extra hydration boost to the contour of my eyes – the Anti-fatigue Moisturizing Fresh Gel is a real life-saver when it comes to fighting those dark circles that tend to appear after a long night out.

My beauty tips

Especially during summer I try to avoid foundations and only use some bronzing powder to warm up my complexion. I highly recommend the Bronzing powder duo which can be easily applied with a powder brush.

"On a bad day there's always lipstick" is my make-up mantra because I simply LOVE lipsticks!

My current favorites are from the Grand Rouge Mat collection. To have a longer lasting result, you can apply a matching lip liner and some fixing powder at the end. As my make-up look is all about the lips, I only use some mascara (ok, a lot of mascara actually ) and eye liner – my favorite products are the Vertigo Volume Mascara and the Vertige Felt Tip Liner.  That’s it !

Allergies, irritation… how to prevent reactions?

On vous dit tout sur comment les éviter !

Have you ever wondered how our experts prevent risks of allergies or irritation when they formulate your favorite products? We’re here to explain it all to you!

Allergic reaction and irritation: what’s the difference?

Don’t confuse an allergic reactions with irritation!

An allergic reaction appears upon contact with a molecule, called an allergen, and manifests itself with a delay. It extends well beyond the area of contact with the product.

Irritation, on the other hand, is due to the use of a cosmetic product not suited to one’s skin type. It appears immediately and is limited to the area of contact. Irritation disappears when you stop using the product, while an allergic reaction may take longer to heal.

First step: the formulation

The formulation step is crucial! To limit risks of allergic reactions, we do not use raw materials known for their allergenic potential (and yes, some are very well-known) in our formulas. Instead, we choose ingredients not reputed to be sensitizing.

The same applies for irritation. When formulating a product, we exclude ingredients known to be irritating. But it’s important to know that it’s all a matter of the dose. An ingredient may be irritating at a certain dose, but not in the concentration present in the product. We take the concentration of the ingredient in the product into consideration, as well as the general conditions of use, for example if a product is used in a treatment or gets rinsed off (for example, a shower gel).

Therefore, the formulation step is vital, but we don’t stop there: once the product is formulated, we move on to tolerance and safety tests!

Second step: time for testing!

We evaluate the safety of each ingredient through our toxicology experts, and we test each of our formulas to verify it is truly safe and can be tolerated, under the supervision of a dermatologist.

It is only during this stage of development that one can judge if a formula can be tolerated, taking into account the formula, its use, and the target population for which the product is intended (for example, women with sensitive skin).

But that’s not all! With our customer service department, we are constantly monitoring our products thanks to your feedback!

Risk-free doesn’t exist!

Our products are formulated to minimize the risk of allergic reactions and irritation due to their use... but the concept of “risk-free” doesn’t exist.

In fact, with allergic reactions, it’s a bit like Russian Roulette: it’s extremely rare and individual. Each person can be allergic to something different, and everyone may react differently to the same allergen... and the reaction to an allergen isn’t necessarily immediate.

In short, measuring the risk is rather complicated. Therefore, avoiding ingredients known for their allergenic potential remains the most effective way to limit the risk!
