How do I effectively eliminate dandruff?

Sick of your dandruff? Dandruff is a daily occurrence in the life of one in every two people. Find out how to effectively get rid of it naturally.

Better understanding dandruff

Dandruff contains tiny skin fragments called “flakes” that come off the scalp. More specifically, they are dead cells that gather and form clusters, making them visible to the naked eye.
But how do they form? In a normal cell cycle, the cells on the scalp surface renew themselves approximately every 21 days. But this scalp renewal can sometimes be disrupted and it then accelerates. Cells on the surface are then no longer able to naturally and automatically eliminate themselves, and instead remain clumped together to form what is known as dandruff.
Dandruff is mostly found in the hair, but it’s also possible to see it on other body parts where there is hair (beard, eyebrows, etc.). Note that dandruff can also come with scalp irritation, as well as more or less intense itching.
There are two type of dandruff:

- Dry dandruff
Dry dandruff is linked to excess sebum production and a disturbance in scalp cell renewal. This dandruff looks like a white powder, does not stick to the scalp and falls onto the shoulders. Dry dandruff mostly affects dry or normal scalps.

- Oily dandruff
Oily dandruff is linked to the development of a micro-organism called “Malassezia furfur”, which damages sebum and causes flaking. It is characterized by patches that stick to the scalp, often linked with itching and irritation on the scalp. Eliminating dandruff becomes essential for scalp comfort.
What are the causes?

This phenomenon can be caused by multiple factors:
- An abnormal sebum secretion from the sebaceous glands (in excess or in too small a quantity)
- Colonization of the scalp by yeasts like “Malassezia furfur”
- A hormonal imbalance
- Stress
- A poor diet
- A polluted environment
- An unsuitable hair routine
- Repeated wearing of helmets of caps
- Etc
